Mdina Glass

The importance of Mdina Glass in the scheme of things is that without it Isle of Wight Glass would possibly not exist in the way it does today. Mdina Glass was the first studio set up by Michael Harris in 1968 with his wife Elizabeth and a partner - Eric Dobson. Due to political pressure amongst other factors Mike and his family left in 1972 and found the Isle of Wight an ideal substitute to set up the now world famous studio. We will shortly add a company profile on Mdina with more details.

Platters Designed  by Nevise and Olivia Said of Mdina Glass - Malta
This is a very time consuming and technically difficult process due to the fact that each component shape used in the construction of the picture is a piece of glass which has been separately cut by Olivia from glass coloured with glass enamels. The component shapes are taken from a fine art print of a famous artist's painting. They are then cut out and trimmed until they fit together. This part requires some of the greatest care and skill and takes two people 2 to 3 days to complete. They are then placed on a sheet of flat glass to complete the design. The completed pictue is placed over a dished ceramic mould and carefully heated in a furnace allowing the pieces to fuse to the sheet. This final part of the process is the most critical since it is planned that the pieces fuse to the glass sheet before it slumps into the mould. Sometimes they do not and if the parts slide out of place the whole piece has to be rejected and destroyed.
